City chair leads tribute to late engineering technician Yuri Botello

The chair called the ceremonial meeting to order on Jan. 20, 2026, and opened with a video montage honoring former Manhattan Beach engineering technician Yuri Botello. "Tonight, we gather to remember and celebrate someone truly special, our friend and colleague, former colleague, Yuri Botello," the chair said as the council introduced the memorial item.

Colleen Merzakanian, the city manager, described Botello's impact on the workplace and the community: "His infectious smile, heart of hope, and positivity were unmatched," she said, and added that the city will remember him "for the incredible human being" he was.

Several coworkers and Public Works staff spoke about Botello's hands-on contributions and personal character. Sean Roberts, field operations manager in Public Works, recalled Botello's role on the Bruce's Beach plaque project and his leadership on the 10Ks committee, saying Botello "was instrumental on removing it and getting the foundation in place" and that he brought passion and practical ideas to his work.

Other colleagues offered personal memories, describing Botello as disciplined, generous and beloved by co‑workers and residents. The chair noted Botello's widow was present and offered a plaque—previously used when the council adjourned in his memory on Dec. 2—to be brought to the family rather than asking them to come forward.

The council closed the memorial portion of the ceremonial agenda with thanks to the family and staff for sharing memories. The ceremonial meeting then continued with awards and recognitions.
