La Mesa reports drop in property crime, expands homeless outreach and honors fallen officer

Mayor Mark Rapistathis said La Mesa "saw an 11% reduction in property crime" in 2025 and reported significant decreases in commercial burglary, theft and auto theft. He credited efforts by police and public safety partners while acknowledging personnel changes, promotions and new team members in the department.
On homelessness, Rapistathis said the La Mesa Homeless Outreach and Mobile Engagement team added a clinician and a housing navigator and "helped permanently house 62 individuals this year, housing 204 people since the program began in 2021." He presented the staffing additions and housing placements as examples of the city's outreach and housing-focused approach.
Rapistathis also solemnly honored Officer Lauren Craven, noting she was "killed in the line of duty on October 20" and praising her "strength, courage, and sacrifice." The mayor linked that loss to the city's reaffirmed commitment to standing together.
Separately, he noted Heartland Fire and Rescue achieved an Insurance Services Office (ISO) Class 1 public protection classification after a five-year review, placing the department among the highest-rated U.S. districts and noting strengthened preparedness and coordination.
