Police chief reports staffing gains, tech upgrades and plans for regional radio system

Police Chief McEachin delivered the department27s quarterly update, citing 10,313 total incidents for the quarter and describing staffing and technology developments.
McEachin said the department processed 6,118 calls for service, generated 989 cases and made 258 arrests during the period. He reported the installation of Axon interview-room servers that now allow detectives to view interviews from their offices and noted that Post and DOJ compliance reviews found the department in compliance. He also said the department is recruiting to fill one remaining officer vacancy after two new officers were sworn in at the meeting.
On equipment and infrastructure, McEachin said four leased vehicles are in production with an estimated arrival in the spring, and the department intends to expand license-plate reader coverage after legislative questions were resolved. He also described engagement with the county on a regional P25-compliant radio upgrade and said the county will roll out the system starting with UC Merced.
Council followed up on questions about interoperability with the sheriff27s office; McEachin said current mobiles and portables are P25-compliant and should work on the new system. There was no action requested beyond staff continuing procurement and integration planning.
