Stanton Middle students ask Kent City School Board to back eighth-grade mentorship program

Logan Schoenberg, an eighth-grade student at Stanton Middle School, told the Kent City School Board she had started a program called the "eighth grade mentors" that pairs eighth graders with sixth graders to help reduce behavioral issues and strengthen student leadership. "My name is Logan Schoenberg, and I am excited to tell you about a program I've started called the eighth grade mentors," Logan said.
Logan described how the program began after hearing about sixth-grade behavioral struggles and said the mentorships focus on one-on-one and group conversations with students in in-school suspension and other supports. Peers who helped launch the program described personal turnarounds and said they want to help younger students "turn things around." Logan said the group is working with counselor Miss Pluck and Mr. Goshi to train seventh graders to carry the program forward.
Board members asked about sustainability and praised the students. Several board members encouraged the group and thanked Stanton Middle School staff for hosting the meeting. A musical presentation by another student followed the mentorship presentation.
