Planning Commission votes to agendize review of pre‑1941 houses and coordinate with HPC work plan

The Los Gatos Planning Commission voted Feb. 25 to agendize a future discussion — to be scheduled by staff — on processes for evaluating pre‑1941 structures and related historic‑preservation procedures.

Commissioner Sordi introduced the proposal, saying he wanted the commission to "discuss the process of evaluating pre 1941 houses" and to consider obtaining another expert opinion to balance prior input. Staff told commissioners the council had directed the item to be considered following completion of objective design standards work and noted mapped data would need updating to remove demolished structures.

Commissioner Thomas supported placing the topic on a future agenda and suggested starting with the Historic Preservation Committee's work plan so the commission's feedback aligns with priorities already considered by the council. The commission adopted a friendly amendment to that effect before calling the question; the motion passed unanimously.

Commissioner Burnett warned that while the town seeks to preserve smaller, more-affordable homes, appeals and outside experts sometimes shift outcomes and suggested having an in-town historic evaluator available when appeals arrive. Staff clarified they would add the topic to a future agenda and that at this stage they would bring topics for discussion rather than perform substantive new work.

The motion was procedural: it directs staff to schedule the discussion and provide relevant background materials, including the HPC work plan and any mapped inventories that can be updated to reflect demolished structures. No binding policy or ordinance was adopted; next steps will depend on the scope set by commissioners and subsequent staff work.
