The San Carlos City Council on Jan. 26 presented city coins to two residents who stepped in when a customer suffered cardiac arrest at a local restaurant on Nov. 21, 2025.
Mayor Venkatesh told the council that the pair performed CPR and used an automated external defibrillator after the victim, identified as Ryan Connolly, collapsed at Aigwe restaurant. "Doctors have stated multiple times that Ryan would not have survived without their intervention," the mayor said when presenting the coins.
One of the honorees urged residents not to be afraid to act in an emergency and gave practical advice on hands‑only CPR and AED use. "If the minimum thing you could do is dial 911 to get help on the way, you've already started the clock to saving somebody," the honoree said. He described compressions and the AED's audible prompts, and told the council that a layperson can operate an AED.
A local med‑tech attendee told the council his company will donate an AED to the taqueria so a device will be on site in future emergencies. "My company is actually donating one to the taqueria," he said.
The council and meeting attendees applauded the residents. The presentation highlighted the value of bystander intervention and publicly available AEDs; council members also praised the honorees and noted opportunities to strengthen community awareness of CPR and AED locations.
The meeting moved on to other items after the recognition.
