Belle Haven subcommittee proposes improved wayfinding and a targeted outreach plan

Members of a newly formed Belle Haven outreach subcommittee told the Menlo Park Library Commission that the Belle Haven branch is "quite hidden" and that better external wayfinding and outreach would help residents find and use library services.
The subcommittee reported it has met twice and suggested adding a small identifying panel under an existing neighborhood "welcome" sign, placing directional signs on high local traffic roads such as Willow Road, and using an a‑frame or program board at the building on days of active programming. "We were thinking, what if we added a little portion below that sign perhaps that added something about our library and community center," a subcommittee representative said.
Staff cautioned that the city must review sign regulations and inventories. "I think where I would have to ask some questions of Public Works and planning is what are the sign regulations," the staff facilitator said, noting the city has used corner signs in the past and that manufacture and mounting are not expensive but require regulatory clearance.
Commissioners and staff discussed metrics and next steps: pair the subcommittee with the library marketing team and the city public‑information officer, determine what success would look like (registrations, program attendance, or web traffic), and prepare a short list of sign locations and a cost estimate for follow up. The commission asked staff to report back with inventories and regulatory guidance before the subcommittee refines a final recommendation.
