The Desert Hot Springs Planning Commission on July 8 voted unanimously to approve Development Permit 23-8 and Conditional Use Permit 25-6 for the proposed 38-room Waterland Resort.
Staff described the project as a Spanish-style, family-oriented resort with water features, a restaurant, a small water slide and three buildings that form a courtyard; the project site spans three parcels in the Visitor‑Serving Commercial zoning district. Staff said the hotel proposes a maximum height of 38 feet, which requires a conditional use permit because the VSC district’s standard height limit is 30 feet; staff recommended certifying a CEQA Class 32 urban infill exemption.
Commissioners asked staff about how the height measurement was applied on the sloped site, and staff explained the 38-foot figure includes eaves and rooftop elements. The record shows no public opposition on the item. After discussion, the commission moved and unanimously approved the permits subject to the conditions of approval in the staff report.
