The Desert Hot Springs Planning Commission unanimously approved Conditional Use Permit 24-13 on July 8 to allow a two-story, 3,073-square-foot motorcycle repair and retail shop at the northwest corner of Palm Drive and Desert View Avenue.
Assistant Planner Eva Lara presented the proposal and recommended certifying a CEQA Class 32 urban infill exemption. Applicant Ryan Murray, the owner and developer, told commissioners the business will focus on American-made motorcycles and performance work that he expects to be quieter than chopper-style bikes. Murray said interior HVAC systems and the practice of keeping bay doors closed would reduce noise, and he offered to post signs asking customers to be respectful of neighbors.
Commissioners questioned anticipated noise and operations; Murray said there would be only two service bays and that any complaints would be handled in compliance with state and local noise ordinances. After public comment in support from resident Carl Thompson, the commission moved to certify the exemption and approve CUP 24-13; the motion passed unanimously.
The applicant estimated roughly a year to begin operations after receiving final approvals.
