Police chief: Axon five-year contract will cost about $85,000 from Measure H in year one; overtime driven by understaffing

Police Chief Trent Johnson briefed the Measure H Citizens Oversight Committee on Aug. 20 about a five-year contract with Axon that covers body-worn cameras, tasers, training and video storage. "It's a 5 year contract. The first year is gonna be out of Measure H, and it's $85,000, approximately $85,000," Johnson said.
Johnson described the contract as covering the department's body cameras and footage storage as well as providing tasers and training. Committee members asked whether the department's historical overtime levels were due to operations or understaffing. "The majority of our overtime is understaffing," Johnson replied, adding that the department is working with a consultant to find ways to reduce overtime and that changes are expected to start next year.
