Committee reappoints Chair Steely, keeps 6 p.m. meeting time

At its Aug. 20 meeting, the Measure H Citizens Oversight Committee reappointed Chair Steely and took several procedural votes, including retaining the committee's existing 6:00 p.m. start time.

The annual appointment item was presented by city staff. A committee member moved to renominate Steely for chair and a second was recorded; the roll-call vote was 4-0 in favor and Steely was reappointed.

The committee approved the consent calendar by the same 4-0 roll-call margin. Members briefly questioned the proposed schedule of future meeting dates (March, May and September) before moving the consent items.

On a staff request to move regular meetings from 6:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. to reduce overtime and allow more time for community-center room breakdown, members raised scheduling conflicts with a Wednesday 5:30 p.m. start. One member noted the committee had met at 6:00 p.m. "since, I believe, 2007" and moved to retain the current time; the motion passed 4-0. Committee members asked staff to return at a future meeting with information estimating any overtime cost implications of keeping or changing the start time.

Why it matters: Procedural votes determine leadership and operational logistics; the committee signaled it prefers to keep the traditional start time while requesting data to assess any staff cost trade-offs.

Next steps: Staff will return with overtime-cost information and the start-time item will be placed on a future agenda for renewed consideration.
