Staff reports gymnastics center water damage, refunds and temporary programming; summer‑camp registration, Black History Month events noted

Library and Community Services staff told the commission of storm-related water damage at the gymnastics center (refunds issued, four weeks of no‑cost temporary programming at Arrillaga Recreation Center), summer-camp enrollment opening Feb. 6, and upcoming Black History Month events on Feb. 7 and Feb. 3 at Belle Haven Community Campus.
Staff provided the commission with December program statistics and a series of service updates.
The department reported approximately 1,400 winter-season enrollments across programs including fitness, dance, sports, gymnastics, music, drama and arts and crafts. Summer-camp enrollment opens Feb. 6 at 9 a.m., staff said.
Staff told commissioners storm-related water damage forced a temporary closure of the gymnastics center over the holidays. "City staff and city teams are working to repair the damage so that we can safely reopen the center," a staff member said. Staff said refunds were issued for canceled classes and that the department will offer four weeks of no-cost temporary programming at the Arrillaga Recreation Center while repairs proceed.
Staff also highlighted upcoming community events tied to Black History Month: a celebration on Feb. 7 at the Belle Haven Community Campus (1–4 p.m.) and a Congolese dancing event on Feb. 3 (3–6 p.m.), both open to the public. Staff flagged a habitat-restoration volunteer opportunity at Bedwell Bayfront Park on Feb. 14 organized by Grassroots Ecology.
Commissioners asked follow-up questions about program timing and expressed appreciation for staff efforts to provide alternative programming during the closure. Staff said they will report back on repairs and reopening timing when available.
