The Burlingame Transportation Commission voted 3–0 to support staff’s recommended Cadillac Way option as the preferred pedestrian/bicycle crossing alignment for the Broadway grade‑separation project.
City staff member Mister Wong told the commission the project’s cost rose substantially after a CM/GC review — from roughly $300 million to more than $600 million — and that value engineering removed the Broadway station from the design and narrowed the crossing footprint. Wong presented three crossing alternatives and said staff favored the Cadillac alignment “because of what it will do for the Bay Trail and going forward.”
Commissioners questioned signal coordination, queuing near the nearby freeway ramp and how the project would handle the existing Morrell at‑grade crossing; Wong said Morrell would be removed because the new rail alignment will raise tracks and eliminate the at‑grade crossing. A public commenter who identified as a former commissioner urged the Carmelita alignment, noting side‑street parking and travel patterns that favor that crossing.
Commissioner Brown moved and Commissioner French seconded a motion “that we approve, option 2 and with Cadillac Way, the and the structure that’s planned for Cadillac Way.” The clerk took a roll call (Brown: yes; French: yes; Chair Martos: aye) and the motion passed 3–0. Wong and staff will return with design refinements and 65% design materials; commissioners emphasized the need to coordinate signals and measure potential traffic impacts for adjacent intersections.
The commission’s support is advisory and the project remains contingent on securing federal and other funding to advance to final design and construction.
