Public and chamber urge better CHAMP gallery outreach and lower application fee

At the March 4 meeting public commenters raised concerns about visibility and access for the CHAMP gallery and public-art application fees.
Charlie Price, a longtime local resident, said he learned about the gallery from the local paper but described the display as "decorations in a hallway" and said it was not well advertised to the public. "It looks like decorations in a hallway," Price said, urging clearer communication so residents know about the exhibit.
Lynn Scruggard, representing the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce, told commissioners the Chamber is working to highlight the 7 Hills district and that businesses interested in hosting permanent installations find the application fee prohibitive. "We've heard concern from numerous businesses who are very excited to bring art to their business, but they find the fee to apply for art to be cost prohibitive," Scruggard said, and asked the commission to review the fee structure to encourage more participation.
Chair Celine Negrete and city staff said the commission does not directly control some fee schedules but can refer concerns to City Council or place them on a future agenda; commissioners said the workshop could include review of fee and outreach strategies.
