Nevada City Public Arts Commission schedules April workshop to set priorities

The Nevada City Public Arts Commission voted unanimously on March 4 to schedule a workshop for its April 1 meeting to set the commission's mission, prioritize projects and clarify staff capacity.

Chair Celine Negrete said the workshop is meant to "reground" the commission and review what the ordinance allows and the practical limits of staff support. City Manager Carrie Wright urged commissioners to offer input on priorities so staff can "deliver on some of the things you're looking to accomplish," and proposed formats ranging from a small internal session to a larger community event.

Commissioners debated whether April 1 should be an internal planning session or an open community workshop. Commissioner Cathy Wilcox Barnes moved to schedule the workshop; the motion was seconded and passed on a roll-call vote with all present voting aye. The commission asked commissioners to send suggested agenda items to the chair and staff within two weeks so the chair and staff can compile and draft the workshop agenda.

The discussion also covered the CHAMP gallery timeline and upcoming artist notifications; staff said they would research the timing for artist communications and, if needed, delay removals or adjust deadlines to align with the workshop outcome.

The workshop will be a noticed public meeting, but commissioners indicated they plan to consolidate internal priorities first and then consider broader community engagement.
