City staff presented quarterly updates for the fire and police departments at the Jan. 12 council meeting.
Fire Chief Randall reported station call counts, training and outreach activities, two new personnel hires, two fire-engineer vacancies and $14,488 in revenue for the quarter. He noted the Type 6 engine delivery, an RFP for weed-abatement contractors, and that the CAL FIRE contract renewal process is underway. Fire Marshal Garballa explained how a fire-system compliance tracking service (Brycer) will be used to monitor fire risers and sprinkler system inspections at no cost to the city; vendors pay a $25 fee for the tracking service.
Staff presenting for Police Chief Nikitchen reported 8,915 total incidents in the quarter (including 6,142 calls for service, 163 arrests and 488 citations written), completion of the dispatch-center project, reorganizations creating two corporal positions and several near-term vehicle procurements. Council members asked staff to return with gym-equipment policies for on-site fitness equipment and requested additional enforcement detail for citations and nighttime coverage.
Council requested follow-up reports on specific metrics (for example, instances when mutual aid arrived and rigs were called off) and staffing timelines for vacancies.
