The La Habra Heights EPC Public Safety & Emergency Preparedness Committee used much of its Jan. 15 meeting to solicit volunteers, confirm a quarterly cleanup and review local CERT training opportunities.
The chair, Al (Chair), reminded members that the next quarterly cleanup meets Saturday at 6:45 a.m. at the community center and encouraged residents to participate. "It's been very productive and the best thing that I get out of it is meeting my neighbors," he said.
Members discussed plans to pair volunteer projects with the national "Love Your City" program (locally to be promoted as "Love La Habra Heights") and to recruit churches, service clubs and businesses for donations and manpower. The committee agreed to identify 4–7 homes for a volunteer work day focused on weed whacking, minor repairs and yard cleanup for residents with special needs.
Training and recruitment: committee members reported a Nov. 22 sandbag workshop and said they are tracking LA County Fire Department CERT classes scheduled in February and March; members stressed organizers typically need at least 10 committed participants to run a local class. John Dominguez was credited with recruitment and maintaining the volunteer contact list.
Public comment: resident Bruce Thomas told the committee he is "totally disappointed" with low participation and urged more people, especially younger volunteers, to join the fire department, CERT and fire‑watch teams.
Administrative action: the committee also approved (by motion and unanimous voice vote) meeting dates for September, October and November; the chair instructed staff to file the action.
