The Weed City Council accepted the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) closeout for CDBG-00015, the City of Weed water and sewer project, during a required public hearing.
City staff explained the work had two primary components: approximately 4,000 feet of water line improvements completed in 2023 by Mike Peters Construction and a sewer-line upgrade near White Avenue. Staff said the installed pipe sizes ranged from 1-inch to 12-inch and that the work improved fire flow to Angel Valley and Lincoln Heights areas. The project also included SCADA upgrades to automate wells and water tanks.
Alicia Garcia, project coordinator for Great Northern Services and the grant writer, told the council the project's budget was $2,744,000, with $45,000 allocated to general administration and $2,500,000 expended for construction as of May 2025. She reported the SCADA work was nearly complete and the city is expected to disencumber about $160,000 when final reporting is finished; the grant closes on August 7.
"The SCADA system is 90%, 99% complete," Garcia said, urging contractors to finish remaining punch-list items before the grant deadline. With no public proponents or opponents appearing, the council voted to accept the closeout and formally close the project.
What happens next: staff will complete final inspections and reporting to close the grant before the August 7 deadline and disencumber remaining funds.
