Danielle Hughes, CEO of Tahoe Spark, told the council she has been meeting with state legislators and asked the city to join calls for stronger oversight, saying the planned Greenlink infrastructure and data‑center tie‑ins threaten the region’s energy reliability and that local customers face higher wholesale costs. Hughes asked the council to request an emergency state response and to convene Liberty Utilities, CPUC representatives and local advocates so evidence and concerns can be aired publicly.
Other speakers described worries about smart meters (health and fire concerns cited by a few commenters), the closure of Liberty’s local walk‑in payment center, and the prospect that NV Energy could redirect supply once Greenlink is complete. Interim city manager Roever told the council she had spoken with Liberty’s California president and confirmed Liberty’s president had agreed to attend the council meeting on April 21 to address customer‑service and the notice that NV Energy may stop serving Liberty when Greenlink is completed.
What the council asked staff to do: Council members commended staff’s outreach and emphasized keeping the California Public Utilities Commission and state officials informed. Council also asked staff to prepare follow‑up materials for the April meeting with Liberty and to bring additional information to the next council agenda.
