Campbell council approves $370,057 contract to renovate community center skate park

The Campbell City Council on Tuesday approved a resolution awarding a construction and equipment-installation contract to American Ramp Company for the community center skate park renovation, for an amount of about $370,057. The Council voted unanimously among members present.

Recreation and Community Services Director Natasha Bissell told the council the skate park, installed in 2005, has exceeded its life cycle and some ramps recently failed. "The ramps are currently not meeting the ASTM safety standards," Bissell said, recommending fabrication and installation of new, prefabricated ramps that the vendor will install on site.

Bissell described a community-driven design process that included a public meeting, an online survey and review by park users. She said designers proposed two substantially different layout options and staff incorporated feedback from frequent users to place smaller, heavily used units and to retain the half-pipe in its existing location.

Council members pressed staff on durability and funding. Bissell estimated the new features would have a life of "another 15 or 20 years," and said staff had identified CIP funds and a prior allocation to speed the project. Council discussed a $100,000 design contract and staff said about $20,000 had been used and the remaining $70,000 would be applied to the work under the new agreement.

Councilmember Heinz moved adoption of the resolution to award the contract; the motion passed on a recorded roll call with all attending members voting yes. The resolution authorizes the city manager to execute the agreement and proceed with procurement and installation.

Next steps: staff will finalize the contract and set a construction schedule with the vendor; existing ramps will be removed and the site prepared before prefabricated units are installed.
