San Dimas — At the April 22 meeting the City Council presented proclamations recognizing local achievements and heard multiple public comments stressing the value of city recreation services.
Mayor Emmett G. Baydar and community representatives recognized Sudesh Narala for earning the rank of Eagle Scout and read a city proclamation noting her 24 merit badges and a service project constructing a paver pathway at San Dimas High School. The council also honored San Dimas High School athletes, including CIF girls wrestling champion Abrielle Baeza and the culinary team that won the California ProStart Culinary Cup and will compete at the national invitational in Baltimore.
Assistant Chief Steve Cabrera and council members recognized firefighters from Engine 141, Quint 64 and other crews, and thanked Los Angeles County sheriff deputies for wildfire deployments to Pacific Palisades and Eaton Canyon. The council read a proclamation honoring those first responders.
During oral communications, speakers representing community groups and residents outlined upcoming community events and urged the council to preserve recreation services: Jeanette Page announced a senior club yard sale on May 17; Matt Koslow, a San Dimas letter carrier, asked for volunteer help for the annual food drive on May 10 and cited local and county collection totals; Nancy Munoz described library programs for children and teens; and several residents, including Terry Stegall and Jim Engman, urged continued support for the recreation center and a municipal swimming pool for safety, exercise and access to affordable lessons.
City staff noted the rec center item will appear on a future agenda where council can discuss options in detail; under Brown Act rules the council could not discuss or act on those comments tonight. The council thanked speakers and staff for their community work before moving on to the evening’s regular agenda.
