Avondale council promotes Martha Ortiz, proclaims awareness months and welcomes Cub Scouts

The council opened its Sept. 23 meeting with an employee recognition, two proclamations and a brief presentation by Cub Scout Pack 91.
Josh Perez (introduced in the meeting) presented Martha Ortiz as the city’s newly promoted legal compliance officer, effective Sept. 16. The introducer said Ortiz has about 27 years in code enforcement, serves on the Code Enforcement League of Arizona board and holds a degree from Grand Canyon University.
Council members then heard proclamations: one proclaiming September 2024 as Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, noting national diagnosis and survival-rate statistics referenced in the reading; and a second designating Sept. 15–Oct. 15, 2024 as Hispanic Heritage Month, with a brief history of the observance and a call for community celebration.
During unscheduled public appearances Cub Scout Pack 91 described its sponsorship by American Legion Post 61, noted roughly 12 scouts in the pack and outlined community activities such as visits to police and fire stations, camping and participation in city events like Kids Fest.
Council thanked the scouts and moved through the consent agenda (with item G pulled for separate consideration) before turning to the evening’s presentations and business. The meeting adjourned after council remarks and a short summary of current events.
