Ceres council unanimously ratifies Trenton Johnson as police chief

The Ceres City Council unanimously ratified the appointment of Trenton Johnson as chief of police and approved his employment agreement after a brief public comment period in which former Chief Mike Borges and other residents expressed support.

City staff asked the council to adopt a resolution ratifying Johnson’s appointment and to authorize the city manager to execute the employment contract. City Manager Douglas D Dunford noted that promotion from within saves the city recruitment cost and said swearing‑in events are planned for late June and July.

Former Chief Mike Borges, speaking during public comment, said he had known Johnson since he began as a reserve officer and praised his growth and leadership. Borges told the council the selection “saves you money from having to do a recruitment” and commended the appointment on merit. Another speaker, Lee Brandt, also expressed support.

During council remarks, members highlighted Johnson’s community presence and responsiveness. Councilmember Serena Otero said Johnson’s communication with the council had been “awesome” and praised his accessibility. Vice Mayor Martinez moved to ratify the appointment; councilmember Viera seconded. The motion passed on a roll call vote of 5–0.

Trenton Johnson thanked the mayor and council and pledged to serve the community where he lives and work with his department to address local problems.

What happens next: Staff will finalize the employment agreement and complete the scheduled swearing‑in; the city manager said staff will finalize payment and administrative steps now that the budget was adopted.
