At the second reading the council adopted an ordinance amending the municipal code to establish fire-hazard-severity zones in chapter 32 of title 15 (building and construction).
Tom Ingalls, the city's fire marshal, updated the council on the science and said the city had been awarded a grant through the Inland Empire Regional Conservation District to develop a community wildfire protection plan. Ingalls said the award would support hiring a consultant and other work over a two-year period and that the city received the maximum amount available to each applicant: "The grant amount was $75,000," he said.
Council members asked how the plan might affect homeowner insurance and Ingalls said the plan and firewise-community work can help with insurance premiums though he could not promise a particular outcome. The council adopted the ordinance by roll call vote; all present voted yes.
The city also said staff will use elements of the community wildfire protection plan to guide outreach with homeowners' associations and to help create more area-specific mitigation plans for new high fire-hazard zones.
