Nevada City approves $5,000 contribution and sign authorization for Sierra Streams Institute

The council approved a $5,000 contribution to Sierra Streams Institute and authorized placement of a permanent commemorative sign near the Pine Street bridge, plus a six‑week temporary educational sign in Pioneer Park to mark the nonprofit's 30 years of stream monitoring.

Staff summarized that Sierra Streams has monitored Little Deer Creek and other local waterways for more than 30 years and provides community science and free water testing. Jeff Lauder (speaker 18), Sierra Streams' executive director, told the council the group's baseline monitoring program tracks E. coli and other indicators at multiple sites and that the organization's lab and sampling program allow it to detect spikes and do targeted follow‑up sampling.

Staff recommended a $5,000 contribution, authorization for the permanent and temporary signs and waiver of sign fees (sign designs to be reviewed under the city's normal process). After brief council questions about location and precedent, council voted to approve the contribution and fees waiver.

Councilors and public commenters stressed the importance of better coordination between the city and Sierra Streams when maintenance occurs near monitored sites to avoid undoing restoration work; the nonprofit offered to provide updates to city staff on its monitoring and restoration activities.

Next steps: staff will process the contribution, review sign designs through standard sign review, and coordinate future briefings from Sierra Streams.
