SBCTA presents Measure I accomplishments, council hears proposal to seek extension on 2026 ballot

Otis Greer, deputy executive director of the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority, told the Montclair City Council the countywide Measure I sales-tax measure has funded local streets, regional projects and transit services and solicited resident feedback as the authority plans for the measure's future.
"Measure I has raised more than $2,500,000,000 for transportation projects and has contributed more than $700,000,000 for local streets, roads, sidewalks, pothole repairs, and traffic signals," Greer said during the presentation and asked residents to review SBCTA materials and complete an online survey.
Why it matters: Measure I provides a dedicated revenue stream that has supported local projects in Montclair, including the Monte Vista grade separation and improvements near the I-10. Mayor (chair) told the council the SBCTA board and county supervisors are discussing placing an extension before voters in November 2026 to authorize a sales-tax continuation beyond the current 2040 sunset.
"We are considering going to the ballot in November 2026, asking for authorization to extend the Measure I sales tax past 2040," the Mayor told the council, saying the extension would fund future surface-road, freeway, interchange and transit projects.
Councilors praised Measure I-funded work. Council member Rue said the transit center and multimodal connections benefit students and commuters, and called the $1 million allocation for signal and lighting upgrades along Central Avenue a practical fix for recurring traffic flow problems. "There was indeed funding in the amount of $1,000,000 for Montclair for lighting, signal lighting to sync them and make them a little bit more expedient in their operations," a councilor noted during the discussion.
What was decided: The presentation was informational; SBCTA requested resident feedback and indicated it will continue outreach. Council members asked staff and SBCTA to keep Montclair informed as planning and outreach proceed. No formal council action on Measure I itself was taken at this meeting.
