Council introduces ordinance to update local speed limits after 89‑segment survey

The council introduced Ordinance 13‑27 on June 24 to amend San Dimas Municipal Code section 10.06 and set speed limits on specified streets following an engineering and traffic survey.
Engineering Manager Steven Barragan said the city evaluated 89 segments using speed radar and traffic‑collision data and coordinated recommendations with the sheriff’s department and the city’s traffic‑safety committee. After additional review staff revised initial proposals, restoring nine segments to prior limits for continuity and recommending a net change on 21 segments (20 decreases and one increase of 5 mph).
Councilmembers thanked staff for the re‑evaluation and asked about the rationale for specific revisions; the engineering manager said the 85th‑percentile speed and continuity with adjacent segments guided decisions. Council introduced the ordinance and waived further reading; the motion carried 5–0.
The ordinance will return for adoption at a future meeting.
