The Santa Cruz Valley Unified School District governing board voted on Oct. 8 to hire Christopher Laughlin as athletic director for Rio Rico High School.
During the personnel discussion, board members praised Laughlin’s past work with athletics and wrestling camps and asked about whether he would continue coaching. Laughlin said he does not plan to coach and that the position will be strictly administrative. "I do not plan on coaching again," he said.
Board members noted previous concerns about combining an athletic director role with coaching responsibilities and said they were satisfied that the chosen candidate will focus on athletics administration. One board member said he had previously voted against combining the two roles but expressed support for Laughlin’s new appointment.
A motion to approve the hiring was made, seconded, and passed; the minutes record the motion as carrying. The board welcomed Laughlin and moved on to other agenda items.
