San Bruno council approves ordinance to raise member pay; Salazar votes no

Salazar told colleagues she intended to vote against the ordinance, arguing the staff report compared San Bruno to larger cities and that the proposal effectively "doubles" current pay without following the council's usual multi-year adjustment practice. The mayor and staff reviewed the local history: the council's last documented increase was in 2001; staff said the current monthly stipend is $461.
Council members who supported the ordinance said it updates compensation for elected service and will take effect at the start of the next council term; the ordinance specifies the change will begin in December 2026. The measure passed on a recorded vote of 4-1.
