The court approved adding a sergeant rank to the jail’s staffing structure; committee members said the pay impact would be modest (described in the meeting as roughly a $0.50-per-hour increase for affected lines) and would remain within the deputies line item. The motion to amend the jail policy passed by voice vote.
Separately, the court authorized staff to pursue a federal/state grant to repair or replace the jail’s HVAC system. Committee members described the project as substantial — “a large amount of money,” and noted it could exceed $1 million to $1.5 million if funded — and emphasized the county would use an existing grant writer for applications. The court approved moving forward with the grant pursuit; committee members stressed that the county would not be financially obligated unless the grant is awarded.
The court also approved the emergency management budget additions to finish building repairs (roof/ceiling work) and to transition to leased vehicles for certain county agencies.
The decisions allow county staff to prepare grant documentation and to implement modest staffing and contract changes covered in the approved budgets. The clerk’s office and county finance department will publish the updated budget summaries and ordinance materials following completion of the required paperwork at the courthouse meeting record.
