Ceres officials urge residents to report illegal street vending; city to adjust code enforcement schedules

Council and staff discussed recurring illegal vending and temporary camping in public spaces during the Jan. 26 meeting. Council member Casey asked whether residents should use the nonemergency line to report persistent vendors; the police chief recommended reporting via the city's mobile apps so code enforcement can respond.
"Code enforcement, they are the ones that deal with the illegal vending," the chief said, adding that unless vendors commit a crime, police generally will not respond and that code enforcement has adjusted schedules to include night coverage. "My recommendation would be to use the GoGov app or the Ask Ceres app and send that to code enforcement," the chief said.
Staff also said they will coordinate with the county Department of Environmental Resources to confiscate equipment when permitted, and that storage for seized items historically has been an issue. The chief said code enforcement will try to expand evening hours, but resources are limited and the city lacks 24/7 code enforcement staff. The council asked staff to pursue options for additional enforcement resources and to report back.
