Eastern Area Public Library wins $10,000 Carnegie grant; district students to be honored at Lehigh awards

Betsy Walker, speaking for the Eastern Area Public Library, told the board that the library's programs continue to expand and that the Carnegie Foundation awarded the library a $10,000 grant to support bicentennial-related programming and historic research.
"The library has received a $10,000 grant from the Carnegie Foundation celebrating the 200 and fiftieth birthday of the signing of the declaration," Walker said, adding that the library's partnership with the district dates back 160 years and that the Carnegie building remains in service. She reminded graduating seniors about two $500 scholarships the library's Friends group provides and said the application deadline is Friday, May 1.
Superintendent Piazza and staff also highlighted that the district's "what's so cool about manufacturing" team from the middle school would be recognized at Lehigh University's Stabler Arena the following day. Piazza said the program includes a STEM expo and that the awards ceremony will be covered live on WFMZ-TV.
The library previewed commemorative items, local history programming and a new flag-themed library card for community members and students to access.
