Independent auditors presented the City of Ceres' fiscal year 2023 financial audit at the Oct. 27 meeting and issued an unmodified opinion on the statements, while also reporting one finding: the audit was not completed by the single-audit deadline and is therefore late.
Brett Jones, the engagement manager joining remotely, summarized the audit scope and procedures and said the city's financial statements ‘‘present fairly, in all material respects, the respective financial position of the city." The communications letter accompanying the audit noted the timeliness concern and recommended staff implement procedures to complete subsequent audits on schedule.
Council accepted the audit on a roll call vote (4-1), with Council member Casey voting no and saying he had not had time to fully review the thick packet. The auditor recommended corrective steps to improve timeliness of future audits.
Next steps: staff will work to address the auditor's recommendation and present a timeline for catching up on subsequent audit years.
