Board approves consent items, moves into executive session after public comment calling for safer student routes

The Cohoes City School District board handled routine agenda business, approved the consent portion of the agenda by roll call (with one abstention recorded on item 8a), heard a public comment about student-walking safety and then entered executive session to discuss personnel and a student matter.

Superintendent O'Shea recommended appointing Rachel Marsola as principal of Lansing Elementary; that recommendation was announced to the board during agenda business. The board first voted to remove item 8a from the consent agenda after a motion and roll call, then later moved to approve the consent package (items 7a–g, 8b–j and 9a); the transcript shows an abstention recorded for Mrs. Gendron on item 8a. The clerk performed roll calls for the motions.

During public comment, Danielle Malcolm identified herself as a parent and described persistent transportation and pedestrian-safety problems: "children and parents have been hit and injured and killed going to and from school," she said, and asked what measures the board is taking beyond internal security measures such as cameras and metal detectors.

Following public comment the board voted to go into executive session at 8:13 p.m. to discuss personnel and a student matter; the board indicated it did not expect to return to public session that night.

What happens next: The board will complete executive-session work outside public view; the appointment recommendation and consent actions will be reflected in the minutes and forthcoming personnel records.
