The Royal Oak DDA voted to fund a three‑month contract to keep a temporary restroom unit (branded as "Throne") in Centennial Commons after the city signaled it would not continue supporting the pilot.
Staff presented tiered pricing for a DDA‑only contract: three, six or 12 months at approximately $6,000 per month (quoted totals $18,000, $36,000 and $72,000 respectively). "The city is backing out of the pilot project ... and they're asking for the DDA from this point forward to assume responsibility for the cost of the throne in Centennial Commons," staff explained.
Several directors urged the infrastructure committee to expedite work on a permanent restroom facility; Dr. Brown and other board members said the throne is preferable to a porta‑potty and supports heavily used events. Director Yazbek moved for a three‑month contract with the proviso that the infrastructure committee simultaneously pursue a permanent solution; the motion was seconded and passed by voice vote.
Board members also requested to see the proposed contract in writing and to confirm that the price is a flat monthly fee with no additional usage charges. Staff said contracts will be reviewed by the city attorney and returned to the board for committee review and any extensions beyond three months.
