Six businesses to compete in Daytona Beach City Innovation Challenge finals after record 55 applications

Six businesses will compete Wednesday in the Innovation Challenge finals at the Ocean Center, organizers told the Economic Development Advisory Board during its March 18 meeting.

Lou Paris, who delivered the board's report, said the program drew a record 55 applications this year and the judges selected six finalists to present at the event. "The quality of the semifinalists was impressive," Paris said, adding that the finalists represent a wide range of ideas and sectors.

Jeff Brown, who also serves on the organizing committee, said the event includes a showcase for other entrants who did not make the final round. "Even those that don't make the finals are also able to participate," Brown said, noting the showcase gives attendees a broader look at local entrepreneurship.

Board members asked for examples of finalist projects. Paris and Brown described entrants including: an online accreditation course for pharmacists; Tracker, a system to track shared tools in maker spaces; a gummy-style energy product developed by Embry-Riddle students; a medical suture device intended to speed suturing; tarp-like water-fillable roof bags to replace sandbags; and a telemetry unit for model rockets with educational applications.

The finalists will present Wednesday at the Ocean Center from 5 to 8 p.m.; organizers encouraged members of the board and the public to attend for at least part of the event.

The board heard the Innovation Challenge update as part of its regular reports; organizers emphasized the program's growing participation and the event's role in exposing local firms and students to investors and industry partners.
