The Gloucester County School Board’s Dec. 10 meeting featured two student‑centered presentations that showcased classroom innovation and extracurricular achievement.
Peaslee Middle School math teachers led a brief demonstration of algebra tiles, walking students and board members through how the manipulatives help model expressions and combine like terms. Teacher Jessica Chavez guided student Chloe through several exercises demonstrating how models translate to expressions such as "3x minus 4" and how students use 0‑pair reasoning to simplify expressions.
Gloucester High Schools FFA Environmental & Natural Resources team presented on its October trip to the national FFA convention in Indianapolis, describing competition events (water assessment, soil management, waste management and GPS‑based tasks) and the expo. Team president Lexi Spangler said the chapter benefited from community funders, naming the Gloucester Education Foundation, Gloucester Master Gardeners and Virginia FFA among supporters; student Delisha Minor described her first flight and the experience as life‑changing.
Board members praised both presentations and encouraged wider sharing of the classroom demonstrations and CTE experiences with younger students to boost recruitment into CTE pathways. The board also invited students and staff to the local Ed Foundation race in March and to a January banquet recognizing teacher and student accomplishments.
Next steps: Staff and student leaders said they will pursue presenting classroom strategies to feeder schools and will circulate information on upcoming FFA events and the banquet.
