Drombarger said the idea would mirror unemployment waiting-week rules: "The first 5 days would not be paid because they wouldn't get those with unemployment. But the following days ... we could pay them what they would have received in their unemployment benefit, which we said was about $65 a day," he explained, calling the approach an attempt to avoid "double penalizing" employees who cannot work while others (custodians, maintenance) must report.
Board members expressed support for developing a proposal but asked for hard numbers, a list of affected job classes, and budget impact estimates before taking action. Chair Young said he supported staff returning with a packet for the April meeting so the board could make an informed decision.
Action: Board directed the superintendent and HR to produce a formal recommendation and cost estimate for consideration at the next meeting.
