Heidi Ramirez, a North Las Vegas resident, told the City Council Sept. 17 that the intersection of East Lake Mead Boulevard and Yale Street is a major safety concern for students and parents because there are no designated crosswalks. "I urgently request that the crosswalk be installed at both intersections along East Lake Mead Boulevard and Yale Street," Ramirez said, giving her address for the record.
After Ramirez spoke, Dr. Mike Keough (retired cardiologist, Sun City Alliante) described removable ramps neighbors used to ease traversing curbs after surgery. Keough said the devices are heavy and helpful for his mobility and urged the city not to require disposal without considering disability needs. "I think a good compromise is to make the homeowner keep the things clear of debris," he said.
Orlando Romero asked the council to place a code-enforcement item on a future agenda. Romero said he had emailed the city about enforcement actions he believes infringe on Americans with Disabilities Act access and that Joshua Christiansen, head of enforcement, acknowledged his email and told him the division put a temporary hold on issuing further violations. Romero requested the council and staff review the matter in public session.
Council members asked staff to follow up with the speakers after the meeting and offered to have relevant departments respond directly. The council did not deliberate or act on the specific requests during the meeting; the mayor closed the public forum and the meeting was adjourned.
