The Danbury City Board of Awards unanimously ratified an emergency declaration on Dec. 11 authorizing immediate purchases and repairs after a water‑main break on East Town Avenue.
Purchasing agent Jake Volkin told the board that Public Works Director Antonio Idarola sent an email on Sunday declaring the break an emergency and asking that normal purchasing and bidding procedures be waived so crews could obtain parts and services. Volkin said he and Corporation Counsel Lehi Pinter responded in the affirmative the same day. "He indicated that the public health, welfare and safety was at risk because of this break," Volkin said, summarizing the director's message.
Board members voted to ratify the action taken Sunday to declare the emergency and permit immediate procurement. The vote carried unanimously.
Volkin and other staff noted there were continuing operational impacts at a related pump station and the board’s ratification preserves the city's ability to secure parts and contractors while the emergency repairs proceed. No dollar‑amount amendment or contract award was recorded as part of the ratification; staff said they would return with contract details as needed.
The board proceeded to its next agenda item after the vote.
