North Las Vegas Library district reports visitation growth, describes staff training day and new outreach ideas

Forrest Lewis, library director for the North Las Vegas Library District, told trustees on March 24 that the district is seeing growth in usage and that a recent staff-training day focused on resiliency, de-escalation and service development.
"We had a 10% growth in library visitation over fiscal year 2024–25," Lewis said, and he reported about a 20% increase in digital circulation compared with the prior year. Lewis said those trends reflect a younger, more digitally adept patron base and the district’s push to add workforce and technology services.
Lewis described the staff day as a chance to bring frontline employees together for team-building and training. Human resources led resiliency training and role-play scenarios to practice de-escalation when patrons are in distress; the session ended with a light team exercise and a painting activity meant to build camaraderie.
The district also hosted external presenters. Lewis said the Nevada Donor Network briefed staff on organ-donor registration, Jobtimize demonstrated a career-search resource tied to personality and skill-assessment tools, and 3 Square discussed food-service partnerships and opportunities to expand summer meal programming.
Lewis highlighted recognition and programming innovations: the district has a peer-nominated "star award" for staff; Melissa Robinson, a young-people assistant at the Alliante Library, was cited as a recent recipient after proposing a summer-learning collector-card idea to mark the city’s 80th anniversary.
Lewis noted the district is part of the City of North Las Vegas structure, which allows it to coordinate with city departments on outreach and events. He thanked the board for authorizing the staff day and said the district will continue to develop services and staff capacity.
What’s next: staff will train on new services and continue outreach tied to summer programs and the city’s state-of-the-city events.
