Representatives from the Clark County School District Region 1 briefed the North Las Vegas City Council on March 4 about student attendance and discipline trends in the district's North Las Vegas schools.
The Region 1 presenter (identified in the agenda as the Region 1 superintendent but not named in the transcript) said the district has seen a 6.6% decrease in the number of students designated chronically absent over the past two years and reported 1,956 fewer suspensions that resulted in removal from instruction this year. The presenter said disparities in attendance and discipline between student groups have narrowed and attributed improvements to districtwide interventions including truancy sweeps, home visits and trauma-informed professional development.
The superintendent introduced Ramona Fricker, principal of the STEM and Medical Academy at Jim Bridger Middle School, who described school- and program-level successes, including recognition awards, student performances and partnership activities. The presentation highlighted activities across multiple schools, student leadership involvement on chronic absenteeism and results from an ACT boot camp at Northeast Career Technical Academy.
Councilmembers thanked the presenters and asked staff to keep the council informed of notable school achievements; the item was considered discussion only and no action was taken.
