Summary
IT staff explained the need to replace two eight‑year‑old core switches and to extend wireless licensing; board approved purchases and a five‑year wireless license, with staff noting a roughly 70% E‑Rate reimbursement and preference for Juniper hardware integration.
District IT staff outlined a set of prioritized technology purchases and renewals at the March 16 board meeting and the board approved the recommended contracts.
Jason, the district IT presenter, told the board the two existing core switches in the high school server room are about eight years old and one had failed around Christmas. "Our number is 70%," he said when describing the E‑Rate reimbursement the district expects to receive after paying vendors up front. Jason explained that E‑Rate requires the district to pay initially and then receive reimbursement, which staff expects to arrive within a couple of months. He recommended Juniper‑series switches for this purchase because the IU network engineers are familiar with Juniper and it fits existing operational needs; the board discussed vendor options and redundancy before approving the CNI Sales quote.
Jason also presented a five‑year wireless networking licensing agreement to continue support for the district's 335 wireless access points and recommended keeping the existing hardware while extending licenses. "We've been really happy with this wireless infrastructure," he said, and the board approved the Iron Bow Technologies licensing extension.
On the device side, Jason described a phased computer refresh: laptops for fourth and ninth graders (to be kept through grade cycles), replacement workstations for the high school CAD lab, and a four‑year refresh cycle for staff devices. He noted tradeoffs across vendor quotes (Dell, Asus) and explained why keeping a unified tenant and warranty integration favors certain vendors. The board approved the recommended purchases and a contract with GDC IT Solutions for deployment and ongoing support.
Staff said the purchases will be implemented in line with E‑Rate submission and vendor schedules; reimbursements and delivery timing were noted as follow‑up items.
