The Autauga County Commission voted unanimously on Feb. 3 to advertise proposed local legislation that would create a county sales and use tax of one-half of one percent and a three percent rental tax, both proposed to take effect Sept. 1, 2026, if enacted.
The draft bill text placed in the record specifies that proceeds from both levies would be deposited into the county general fund and that the commission would set collection and administration procedures by resolution. The draft mirrors state code references for taxable activities (Section 45-1-243.01(a)(1), Code of Alabama 1975) and contains administration language consistent with county-collected levies.
Commissioner John L. Thrailkill made the motion to advertise the proposed legislation, and Commissioner Terry Tanner seconded it. The motion carried by unanimous vote of the Commission. The advertisement step does not enact the taxes; it publicly notifies interested parties and preserves the county’s ability to pursue local legislation with the state legislature or other required authorities.
The commission’s agenda packet included the draft bill language submitted for advertisement. The next procedural step after advertising will be any additional public notices or formal introduction to the appropriate legislative process; the county did not vote to adopt the taxes at the Feb. 3 meeting.
The commission adjourned at 5:57 p.m. and is scheduled to reconvene Feb. 17, 2026 at 5:00 p.m.
