Governance committee previews major revisions to suicide-prevention policy and updates to school-calendar rules under Act 56

On Policy 8.19 (suicide awareness, prevention and response), Nader Gojo said the revisions are designed to bring district language up to school code and to formalize existing practices. "There are 4 big sections that really carry you through the policy: suicide awareness and prevention education, methods of prevention, methods of assessment intervention, responses, and then some miscellaneous sections on documentation and procedures and resources," Gojo said, describing expanded definitions, the appointment of district and building suicide-prevention coordinators, coordination with outside behavior specialists, and new reentry-procedure language that requires a family meeting "when possible." The policy also explicitly references the Safe2Say anonymous tip program.
On Policy 803 (school calendar), the committee reviewed changes prompted by Act 56 of 2023. Gojo explained that Act 56 allows districts to meet instructional requirements by either 180 days or a specified number of hours (900 hours for K'6 and 990 hours for grades 6'12), giving schools scheduling flexibility for makeup days and asynchronous options. Committee members asked about how PDE defines a "school hour" and whether shortened days or delays would count toward hours; staff said PDE outlines specific inclusions and exclusions and that Carlisle already calculates hours carefully.
What happens next: both policy revisions will be forwarded by the governance committee for formal board consideration at the next meeting.
