Midway Council adopts tentative FY2026 budget with adjustments, sets June 17 public hearing

The Midway City Council voted May 20 to adopt a tentative fiscal year 2026 budget with the adjustments discussed during the meeting and set a public hearing on the tentative budget for June 17, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. at the Midway Community Center.
Budget officer Nancy Simons told the Council the proposed budget did not balance as presented and identified several line items—particularly in Public Works—that were over budget. Council members discussed removing planned improvements to the ice rink after a related grant application was denied and removing a proposed vacuum truck to help balance the budget. Council and staff agreed to add additional work on the City's water system and on Midway Sanitation District sewer work to the north Center Street trail project, with the additional costs to be provided before final adoption.
City Recorder Brad Wilson explained the statutory requirement to set a public hearing on the tentative budget; the Council unanimously approved setting the hearing for June 17. Mayor Celeste Johnson excused Council Member Jeff Drury from the votes. The tentative adoption leaves staff and council to finalize line-item changes and return to the Council at the public hearing for final budget action.
The Council recorded the motion to adopt the tentative budget with Council Members Orme, Payne, Simons and Simonsen voting in favor (Drury excused).
