Commissioners discuss proposed national opioid 'remnant' settlement; county share unknown

Commissioner Sobel updated the Clearfield County Board of Commissioners March 10 on a proposed settlement tied to ongoing national opioid litigation involving what the administrator characterized as six "remnant" defendants. Sobel said the administrator has proposed a combined settlement of $97,625,000 but that the formula to allocate amounts to counties had not yet been published.
"We don't have an actual monetary amount yet that is proposed for Clearfield County as far as the settlement," Sobel said, adding that the county was notified by the claims administrator and that the board must make a decision by May 4 whether to participate in the proposed settlement. He said county counsel (D'Amico) recommends serious consideration when the proposed allocation is released because rejected offers can be diminished by further litigation.
Commissioners noted the $97.6 million figure is national and that Clearfield County's portion will be small. "It's not gonna be very much," one commissioner said; another estimated the county’s share could be "somewhere between that, maybe 13 or something" (comments reflected uncertainty and were not tied to a final formula).
No formal action was taken at the meeting; Sobel said he will forward details and the county's counsel will review proposed amounts and terms when they are available. The board did not commit to a course of action pending receipt of the claims administrator's allocation details and legal advice.
