North Las Vegas Library board approves $15,000 summer reading grant application

The North Las Vegas Library District Board of Trustees voted Nov. 25 to approve a grant application to the Nevada State Library for an approximately $15,000 summer reading program grant, with a 10% local match to be provided through staff time.
Shelly Alexander, filling in for Director Lewis, told trustees the grant would fund summer learning activities, promotional materials and ‘‘Grama and Go’’ learning kits for ages 0 through adult. Alexander said staff plan to include performers and educators, and to introduce trading cards featuring the library mascot, Buddy Bookworm, to encourage repeat visits and engagement.
"This year, the Nevada State Library is offering a specific grant for summer reading programs. It is $15,000 and there is a 10% local match which we will use through our staff time," Alexander said.
Trustee Henry moved to authorize the application and the board approved the motion by voice vote. The board also authorized the library director or designee to execute contracts and purchase orders related to any resulting award and to make administrative adjustments to budget, term and scope if needed.
The grant application is due in December. If awarded, staff said the funds would be used for programming, learning kits, and promotional materials including T‑shirts and trading cards intended to drive summer visits.
The board moved on to the next agenda item after the vote.
