Council votes to advertise two sheriff deputy positions amid funding concerns

Sheriff Tom Kleinhelter briefed the Dubois County Council on Feb. 23, 2026, saying two deputy positions created by the Board of Commissioners on Feb. 17 are needed to maintain minimum staffing levels and handle workload related to crimes against children and sex-offender registry enforcement.
Council members raised budget concerns and questioned whether School Resource Officers could perform some duties. Kleinhelter said additional vehicles would not be needed and that uniforms and equipment would be funded by the Jail Commissary fund. A motion to approve funding could not carry at that time due to lack of available funding.
The council reached a consensus, 6-1, to advertise the two deputy positions and to fund benefits from the General and LIT funds; Council member Doug Uebelhor was the sole dissenting vote. The council recorded no final appropriation for full funding at the Feb. 23 meeting; the next steps include advertising the positions and further budget review.
