Jefferson City board approves tree removal, concrete repairs, band equipment and supply contract

The Jefferson City School Board on Tuesday approved a package of facilities and operational measures, including removal of 15 trees at Jefferson Academy, targeted concrete repairs around campus, the outright purchase of band equipment and a 15-month janitorial supply contract.
The meeting’s business portion began with routine motions to adopt the agenda and minutes before moving into several action items. Staff recommended removing 15 trees at Jefferson Academy and grinding the stumps for a quoted cost of $4,500 to address safety and playground access; the board moved, seconded and approved the recommendation (motion introduced by the chair and seconded by another member). Staff told the board the work would be scheduled to avoid interfering with ongoing concrete repairs and other construction on campus.
On the concrete work, staff presented photographs of deteriorated sidewalks and delivery areas and proposed a low-bid contract for replacement work not to exceed $7,500, to be completed during spring break. “You can see we got a lot of cracks and breaks there,” staff said while showing images of the Dragon Nest and the media-center delivery zone; the board approved the replacement by voice vote.
The board also approved a one-time purchase of band equipment to establish a more permanent storage and practice location, rather than financing the items. Staff described the purchase as an outright buy to reduce equipment movement and damage and to create safer unloading during events.
Separately, the board authorized a 15-month janitorial supply agreement with Thornton Brothers to mitigate supplier problems reported by the incumbent vendor. Staff said the new contract would cover paper and cleaning products at rates comparable to current costs and would allow continuity of supplies while the district moves into a standard one-year procurement cycle.
Finally, the board reviewed a redline update to the district’s Internet acceptable-use policy that staff said was necessary to comply with recent legislation (House Bill 351). The amendment was moved and seconded and will lay on the table for the required 30-day period before final adoption.
There was no public comment during the meeting; the board then moved into an executive session for personnel matters.
